Empire of Storms Review

Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas
Average Rating on Goodreads: 4.52 of 5 Stars
My Rating:
Page Count: 704

The long path to the throne has only just begun for Aelin Galathynius. Loyalties have been broken and bought, friends have been lost and gained, and those who possess magic find themselves at odds with those don't.

As the kingdoms of Erilea fracture around her, enemies must become allies if Aelin is to keep those she loves from falling to the dark forces poised to claim her world. With war looming on all horizons, the only chance for salvation lies in a desperate quest that may mark the end of everything Aelin holds dear.

Aelin's journey from assassin to queen has entranced millions across the globe, and this fifth installment will leave fans breathless. Will Aelin succeed in keeping her world from splintering, or will it all come crashing down?

I don't know where to start with this....Everything is this book was just...heartbreaking yet fulfilling at the same time. I don't know if I can even separate the things I didn't like from the things I did like because all of the amazing, wonderful things about Empire of Storms is overwhelming my brain.

The Bad
To be honest...I didn't like the relationships. Aelin and Rowan are obviously super amazing and everything, but it was everyone else. I liked the idea of the relationships, but...I don't know. There was something missing. Like every time they had "alone time" it all seemed super redundant. Each of the women thought the same thing about their men. And each of the men responded the same way. I definitely think if there was more diversity in the relationships it wouldn't have felt as repetitive.

The Good
Despite my lack of enthusiasm over the romantic relationships, I greatly enjoyed the friendships that were formed in this book. The group of individuals became basically family and it was so heartwarming to see. Especially with Aelin and Manon. Their love/hate relationship was very entertaining. However, Aedion's attitude towards Aelin was a little frustrating. Sure, she has made mistakes before, she left Terrasen alone for 10 years. But she was just a kid in that time! She shouldn't be held accountable for not taking care of a kingdom that was basically destroyed. Though his reaction when he realized exactly what she had been doing to get them an army was priceless, if a bit heartbreaking.

The ending :( Even with how heartbreaking and sad it was, I cannot wait for the next book. Everything is finally gonna go down and the war we've all been holding our breath for will finally come to light. I am so excited to see what happens to all the characters...though I don't think I could take it if the characters I've come to love die. We've already had way too many close calls, and I'd be unable to go on if Maas actually did kill them off.

This book was everything and so much more. I can't wait for the final book to come out so that we can finally breath a sigh of relief that everyone is safe and Erilea is finally at peace (at least this is the ending I'm hoping for haha)

Tackle Your TBR Read-A-Thon Wrap Up

Unfortunately I didn't get as much read for this challenge as I wanted to...but I am still proud of the fact that I read at all! I've been so busy lately trying to find a job and figure out my living situation, because I don't know if I've told you guys yet, but I didn't get to return to Ireland. I told you that I was having problems with my loan and it turned out, the day before I was to leave, they denied my loan. It has been such a sucky situation lately and I've been so stressed trying to make it work in my favor. But I'm not letting it get me down! I'm going to continue reading and blogging and working towards my goals for this year.

Total Books Read: 3; Three Dark Crowns, Empire of Storms, The Rose & The Dagger
Total Pages Read: 1, 525

Did you participate in this read-a-thon? If so, how many books did you knock off your TBR?
If not, what books have you read in the last two weeks?

It's Monday! Let's Dicsuss...Favourite Reading Spots

This week's topic are my favorite reading spots

My bed
There's nothing like waking up in the morning, grabbing my book, and staying in bed all day. I've done it too! Ben and I would stay upstairs all day, he would play his video games and I would read. It was the perfect set up really.

The couch
I love curling up in the corner of my couch with a book while Ben and our roommate watch tv or do some other random activity.

The library
In my old public library there used to be a little nook right next to the YA section. It was glorious. They had a giant bean bag chair where I would sit and read a book for hours.

A Cafe
With the smell of coffee surrounding me and a comfy chair to sit in, a cafe is a great place to read. Sure there could be people talking loudly or just general everyday traffic in the background, but if you have a good enough book and if you are immersed in it enough, you won't hear a thing!

On the 5th floor of my school library
It isn't technically apart of the actual library. It's a floor right above it and it is so quiet and comfortable. I could read there for hours. Settle in on one of the couches they have with a few snacks and read away. It's super relaxing

Where's your favorite place to read?

Three Dark Crowns Review

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake
Average Rating on Goodreads: 3.85 of 5 Stars
My Rating: 4 of 5 Stars
Page Count: 416

Every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown.

If only it was that simple. Katharine is unable to tolerate the weakest poison, and Arsinoe, no matter how hard she tries, can’t make even a weed grow. The two queens have been shamefully faking their powers, taking care to keep each other, the island, and their powerful sister Mirabella none the wiser. But with alliances being formed, betrayals taking shape, and ruthless revenge haunting the queens’ every move, one thing is certain: the last queen standing might not be the strongest…but she may be the darkest.
I received a copy from Edelweiss for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book in any way.
This book was one of my most anticipated books of 2016! Kendare Blake has been a favorite author of mine since I read her novel, Antigoddess, so I was super excited about this one. It might be slightly spoilery

The Bad
The pace was a little slow for me. I know this was an issue for some others as well and I know that a lot of people DNF. I almost couldn't keep going. It felt like each chapter was only a day in their lives, while we had months until Beltain to get through. Now, I get that each sister needed to be able to tell their story of their training leading up to the quickening and whatnot, but I would have liked a little more action in the beginning. However, even though the pace was a little slow in the beginning, I still thoroughly enjoyed the end.

Joseph!!! >:( He is the worst person ever. Like I was happy for Jules to get back her long lost love or whatever, but he is such a jerk! I also know that the reason for all of the events that transpired is probably Arsinoe's fault, but still! Joseph claims to love Jules but the moment he gets saved by another girl, he's having sex with her. AND THEN when Jules tells him no, that she just needs a little more time, what does he do? HAVE SEX WITH THE GIRL AGAIN!! I felt so bad for Jules :( She deserves someone so much better.

The Good
I honestly loved all of the sisters. They were all so different! Arsinoe is probably my favorite though. Even though she is a bit gullible and naive. But so are all of the sisters. They blindly follow whichever family they get fostered by pretty much without question. But the reason I like Arsinoe's story more than the others is because she has a genuine bond with her trainer, Jules. AND THE ENDING!! Each sister had their own ending scene because they were all in different places, and I feel like Arsinoe's was the most shocking.

I liked the different ways they all were trying to be impressive at the Quickening. Despite the fact that Kathrine and Arsinoe cheated, you could see that all anyone wanted was for them to live and not be killed by the Temple. I loved how everyone was willing to go to such lengths for their queen to win. I know it is probably because of power, but I could also see an underlying feeling of love each family (or at least one member of the family) had for their queen. Love that was not because of the power she would bring the family if she won.

The pace was a little slow, but it was still a well written book with an amazing premise. I don't know if I can wait for the next book! I need to know what the ending means for Arsinoe and Katherine...

Tackle Your TBR One Week Update

Most of the participants of this challenge have been doing daily updates on their blogs but I complete forgot this started this week! So I don't have very many books read /: Thankfully there is another week to go!

Books Read: 1 + 27% of Empire of Storms
Pages Read: 606
Total Books Read: 1
Total Pages Read: 606
Finished Books: Three Dark Crowns

It's Monday! Let's Discuss....eBooks vs Physical Copies

This week's topic is eBooks vs physical copies

I know that this has always been a debate in the book community. Everyone always asks which one is better and we all have our own preferences.

- Allows you to bring multiple books with you where ever you go
- eBooks are cheaper
- You can read in the dark

- You can't smell them (yes...I smell books)
- No battery, no book
- Nothing can replace the feel of a real book in your hands

Physical Copies:

- Keeps tradition alive!
- No battery so no problem
- You can smell them and feel the pages underneath your fingers

- Heavy and hard to carry
- Hard to store them
- You can't read in the dark

As you can see there are pros and cons to both types of books. It is just up to you to decide which you like better. Personally I like physical copies because, if you didn't gather already...I love the smell of books haha

Which do you prefer?

The 5th Wave Review

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancy
Average Rating on Goodreads: 4.14 of 5 Stars
My Rating: 4 of 5 Stars
Page Count: 457

After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Now, it's the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth's last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie's only hope for rescuing her brother-or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.
I decided to read this book because I have yet to see the movie and I wanted to be able to know the differences between the two....I still haven't seen the movie though.

The Bad
When Cassie first meets Evan (or when she wakes up in his house) she seems to get a little too comfortable with him too fast. In the beginning she was this cynical, pessimistic teenage girl who has witnessed horrible things happen, yet she falls so easily for a guy she just met.

I didn't like how you had to figure out which person was talking. The switch in voices was a little disorienting, I mean eventually you figure it out because how can you not, but in the beginning I was like "who is talking? What is happening? This is not Cassie" because going into it, I didn't know it was multiple point of views

The Good
I really liked the concept regarding the aliens. Alien stories have always fascinated me because that is such a mystery surrounding space. I believe there has to be some form of life out there because we can't be all there is, but I have no idea how those other beings would show themselves to us. So it's interesting to see what other people think could happen.

I loved Cassie's brother. He was so cute, and his military name, Nugget, made him even cuter. Honestly I liked all of the kids in their little group. I really want to know more of their stories

I enjoyed this one enough to pick up the second's to hoping it's just as good!
