It's Monday! Let's Discuss....Mental Illness/Abuse In Books

This week the topic I thought we would discuss is mental illness and abuse in books, specifically YA

Recently I have seen so many tweets about how it's okay to have a mental illness and that if you do there are people who understand and are willing to talk with you about it, and I gotta say, it warms my heart to see that. Mental illness IS okay to talk about and you shouldn't feel ashamed for feeling the way you feel.

I, myself, suffer from depression and anxiety. My family always made me feel like I shouldn't talk about it. My father, scoffing, and telling me to suck it up, that we all dealt with stuff and it was how life worked.

Then I found books where they actually had main characters with mental illnesses and I realized that it was actually okay to talk about it and okay to ask for help. We need more of these books. Even though there are more now than before, I still feel like there are too many people who believe mental illness is all an act or feels uncomfortable with it being talked about.

It's the same with abuse. I've talked to a few people on Twitter and they said they shy away from books with that type of subject because it makes them uncomfortable. It should. It should make you so uncomfortable that you want to do something about it. That you want to read as much about it so you can inform others so that people aren't ignorant. There are too many cases nowadays where sexual abuse, or even other forms of abuse, is dismissed because there isn't "proof." We should not live in a time where it is so hard for people to put their attackers away.

I believe the only way for things to change, is to put more information out on the subject. To start writing books, discussing it on social media, anywhere that you think it will reach people. That's actually what my main book is about. It has 4 main characters who have suffered some type of abuse, be it mental, sexual, or physical.

So please, be more aware and make sure people who you know have gone or is going through this, know that it's okay to talk about it.

The Bound Release Day Blitz

But she’s also a keeper of dangerous secrets: like the fact that she holds the heart of the King, and that she possesses magic in a world where magic no longer exists. Determined to discover what this means and how to use her newfound abilities, Cyrene sets off for the distant land of Eleysia. An island nation where Affiliates are strictly forbidden from entering. But the journey is perilous, and the destination may mean utter ruin, as Cyrene comes to learn that everything she’s been told her whole life – about her court, her homeland, and even herself—are bound in a beautiful lie.

availablenow         Staggering down the hallway, she didn’t even look up when she heard her name. “Hmm?” she asked. “Cyrene, there you are!” Someone grabbed her shoulders, and she tipped her head to look up into the most beautiful face. She smiled and felt a renewed burst of energy flow through her. “Hey,” she whispered. “Hey,” he said, threading his fingers through hers. A shiver ran up her back. He glanced around the empty hallway and then tugged her away from the main corridors. She turned a corner, and he pressed her back into a darkened alcove. His mouth was only inches from hers. Her exhaustion was wearing off from the excitement of being with him. “I was really worried about you,” he breathed. “You don’t have to worry about me,” she said, trapped in his gaze. She teetered on her tiptoes and nearly brushed their lips together. Her heart was racing ahead of her. This felt almost better than reaching for her magic. Definitely better than moving one drop of water at a time all day. “You’re wrong.” Then, he softly dropped his mouth down on hers. His lips were tender and slow as they caressed hers. “I will always worry for your safety.” Cyrene’s cheeks heated, and she sighed, leaning back against the hard stone of the alcove. “I didn’t mean to worry you.” His hands pushed up through her hair and tilted her head back up to look at him. She closed her eyes and sighed. She was so tired, and just the feel of his fingers was lulling her to sleep. “That feels good.” His mouth found hers, and despite her exhaustion, she pushed back against his lips with more force. She refused to let the fact that she was tired get in the way of her time with him. “Whoa,” he said, pulling back from her. He rested his forehead against hers, and she could tell he was breathing heavily. “As much as I want this, and I do, I want to make sure you’re okay. This didn’t scare you away?” She shook her head. “This, most certainly, does not scare me.” Then, she kissed him again for good measure. He laughed. “Good. Because I’ve been wanting to kiss you since I first met you.” “You have not!” she insisted. “Are you kidding? A gorgeous, feisty woman who wasn’t afraid to put me in my place the first time she met me? I mostly certainly have.”     teaser3square1       ta-amazonThe Affiliate: Book 1 "With rich romance and twisty political intrigue, THE AFFILIATE is a breakneck fantasy ride that's perfect for fans of THE SELECTION or THRONE OF GLASS." --Susan Dennard, NYT bestselling author of TRUTHWITCH On the day of her Presenting, in front of the entire Byern Court, seventeen-year-old Cyrene Strohm's lifelong plans come to fruition when she's chosen for one of the most prestigious positions in her homeland--an Affiliate to the Queen. It's Monday! Let's Discuss...Favorite Bookstores

This week the topic I thought we would discuss is some favorite bookstores!

Now some of these are not actual bookstores since I mostly order my books online, but seeing as I still get books from them...I'm gonna count them :)

Barnes and Noble
I think this one is a give in. B&N is probably one of the most popular book stores out there. The only problem I have with B&N is their prices. They can be so expensive! But then they have different editions of books that some stores. For example, the B&N edition of Empire of Storms. B-E-A-UTIFUL!

Books of Wonder
I just recently discovered this store! I live in California, so we don't have anything like Books of Wonder here...at least not that I know of. If we do, and you live in CA, then share with me your secretss. Anyway...I recently ordered my first signed preorder from them, Nemesis by Anna Banks, and I'm so excited for it to get here!

Amazon
I literally order so much from amazon. I have Amazon Prime so shipping is always free! I've found that Amazon also has some of the cheapest prices for books, especially pre-orders! Plus they always refund you if the price drops, so you always get their lowest price :)

Half Priced Books
This is a new discovery too! Earlier this summer my friend took me to our local Half Priced Books and I nearly bought the entire store haha. You can get books for as low as $3!! Definitely a store to check out if you haven't already

The Book Depository
I discovered the book depository a couple years ago when my friends and I wanted to send books to each other for christmas. We loved the fact that we could order any book and send it anywhere in the world with no shipping cost! It's great for giveaways and gifts to far away friends!

It's Monday! Let's Dicsuss...Series and Cover Editions

This week the topic I thought we would discuss is how important it is to own the entirety of a series or all of the same cover additions.

When I buy books, I generally like to own all the same editions of a book, be it hardcover, paperback, or simply having all the cover art match. It's just very aesthetically pleasing. When I look at my bookshelves, I want to see all the pretty matching covers.

I also like to own the entirety of a series. Even if I don't generally like the first book, I still like to own the series. I'll either giveaway the first book rather than buying the rest of the series, or I WILL buy the rest of the series, attempt to read it and see if it gets better. If it doesn't, I'll giveaway the series! I actually have lots of books sitting on my shelves that I need to giveaway right now.

But I have seen so many bookstagram photos with matching book covers and they look so amazing! Which is another reason I like to buy all of the same cover editions! Book photos are some of the prettiest and most amazing photos on instagram.

Some of my favorite covers are the Throne of Glass covers, Six of Crows, The Wrath and The Dawn, and The Heroes of Olympus. They have some of the best art I've seen :D There are definitely more covers out there that I think are absolutely gorgeous, but those were just to name a few :)

Do you like to own all the same editions? What are some of your favorite covers?

***
GUYS! THIS BOOK. You have no idea how much fangirled over this book. It had everything. Male protagonist. GAY male protagonist. Death. Mystery. Hot, swanky guy love interest. LITERALLY. EVERYTHING. (sorry for all the caps haha I'm excited)

Flynn's girlfriend, January, has gone missing. He comes home one day after school to find a cop car sitting in his driveway. This is when everything changes for him. Where he decides to become a pseudo detective and locate what exactly happened to January. Now, Flynn is only 15. You're probably thinking, What can a 15 year old do that the cops can't? Yet his determination to keep his secret a secret causes him to stumble upon many details about January's life that he did not know.

There were so many times while reading this where I kept going back and forth on who the killer was. To be honest, the ending seriously threw me through a loop. Like...I was not expecting that at all! But I was definitely very happy with how it ended. The epilogue was bittersweet.

And KAZ. Fucking KAZ. He is so cute and adorable and the amount he cares for Flynn is *insert Heart eyes* I think their relationship started maybe a little fast, but by the end I was shouting for them to officially be together already haha. I had this feeling from the very first time Flynn mentioned Kaz, they would end up together. It was kind of obvious, but that's okay. They were cute <3

I just really loved the writing too. It pulled me in from the very beginning and kept me reading into the wee hours of the night. This was definitely a fantastic debut book for Caleb Roehrig :D

So I suggest you definitely pick this book up the next chance you get! It was cute, mysterious, and will leave you on the edge of your seat guessing at every twist and turn.

Exclusive Excerpt: They weren’t going to make it. Not unless he suddenly sprouted blue tights and a red cape. The hope of escape morphed into despair and resignation and finally reckless pissed-off-ness. No fucking way was he going to die running. He stopped, turned, and faced the truck barreling toward them. The tires ate up the ground at an indecent rate. He clutched Isleen tighter to his chest. For her sake, he wanted it to be a quick death. No more lingering. No more pain. That thought infuriated him. None of this was right. They shouldn’t be on the verge of death. Again. The truck kept coming—now twenty-five feet away. Everything slowed, happening as if through the quicksand of time. A white dandelion floaty meandered on the breeze directly between them and the truck. His heart no longer ran a staccato rhythm. Duh…dum. Pause. Duh…dum. Pause. His life didn’t flash before his eyes. The future did. Isleen’s future. In an ethereal dream beyond time, her skin was gilded by firelight, her eyes devoid of sadness and fear, her body whole and healthy. She smiled, an expression so full of warmth and tenderness and undiluted joy that it plunked itself down inside his heart and wouldn’t leave. He ached to create that kind of smile on her face, but their lives were over. It all could’ve gone so differently if he’d only listened to her, believed in her, found her years before now. The air changed, displaced by the truck only a few feet from them. Heat from the engine blasted his face, smelling of burning oil, gasoline, and a scent reminiscent of popped corn. He locked eyes with the bitch behind the wheel. Her pudgy lips ripped back over her teeth in a snarling scream. Xander knew anger—his best friends were fury and rage—but the look on the bitch’s face went beyond mere anger all the way to unholy. The truck imploded. The sound was supersonic, a resonation that rippled through his skin and muscle to rattle his bones and shake the earth underneath his feet. Metal and glass and fire shot outward, skyward, backward, in a near-perfect arc of destruction. Flaming debris rained around them. He stood there holding Isleen, watching it happen, not believing the message his eyes sent to his brain. “What the…?” The last of the truck parts hit the ground. The pieces burned. That’s all that was left—pieces. Nothing touched them, like they resided under an invisible dome of protection. He glanced down at Isleen for an answer, but she was unconscious, her head lolling so limply on her neck that it looked as if he was carrying a corpse.   Check out the trailer for Race the Darkness: https://youtu.be/8jC21CGolSQ
